EIS is a compact regional airport. Amenities are limited compared to larger Caribbean hubs — eat before you arrive if you have preferences, and expect a relaxed, small-island terminal experience.
💡 EIS Traveler Tips
  • A valid passport is required for all visitors — U.S. citizens included. No exceptions. The BVI is a British Overseas Territory with its own customs.
  • Arrive 2 hours early for departures. The terminal is small and can move quickly, but customs and check-in can back up with multiple regional flights.
  • EIS's runway (4,658 ft) can only accommodate regional turboprop aircraft. No wide-body jets. You will connect through SJU or STT on a smaller plane for the last leg.
  • Rental cars and taxis drive on the left side of the road — same as the UK. Take your time adjusting, especially on narrow mountain roads.
  • Taxi rates are per person, shared — not per vehicle. This is normal BVI practice and a good way to save money.
  • The West End ferry dock is on the opposite side of Tortola from EIS — factor in about 45–60 minutes of travel if you're catching a ferry to St. Thomas.
  • Peak season is December through April — especially during the BVI Spring Regatta. Book flights, taxis, and rental cars well in advance.
  • The Queen Elizabeth II Bridge connects Beef Island to Tortola — it's only a minute's drive, but it's a technically international crossing in the sense that you've arrived on a different cay.
⛴️ Ferry Alternative
Many Visitors Skip EIS Entirely
If you're flying through St. Thomas (STT), the ferry to Tortola is often faster and more convenient than booking a connecting flight into EIS. Regular service connects Red Hook and Charlotte Amalie (STT) to West End and Road Town (Tortola).
